Dexter and The Moonrocks ► It’s A Lot

Texas-based quartet Dexter and the Moonrocks have officially detailed their forthcoming debut studio album, Friends That I Don’t Like, scheduled for release on October 2nd. Coinciding with the announcement, the band has shared their latest single and accompanying visual, “It’s A Lot.”

  • Sonic Architecture: Self-described as purveyors of “Western Space Grunge,” the band continues to blur established genre lines. “It’s A Lot” channels the nonchalant energy of late-90s pop-punk and grunge, defined by down-tuned electric guitars and frontman James Tuffs’ textured, raspy vocal delivery. The arrangement utilizes a syncopated rhythm that perfectly underscores the track’s slacker-rock aesthetic.
  • Thematic Core: Lyrically, the single addresses the psychological weight of rapid success and major life transitions. Guitarist Ryan Anderson notes that the song reflects the intense challenges the band has faced over the past year, encapsulating the exhaustion of navigating newfound prominence as blue-collar musicians from a small Texas town.
  • Project Context: Friends That I Don’t Like serves as a culmination of the group’s varied influences—seamlessly spanning alternative rock, southern rock, and country. According to Tuffs, the record operates as an ode to their upbringing, deliberately rejecting industry pressure to conform to a singular, easily marketable genre.
  • Tour Trajectory: The band will support the new material with an extensive tour stretching through December. The itinerary marks significant milestones for the group, including a headlining slot at the Hopscotch Music Festival in North Carolina, their inaugural international performances in Australia, and a highly anticipated appearance at the Austin City Limits festival.
